Rundown · the rule in 4 segments

What the 10 million views rule actually says

  1. SEG 01 A gate at 10,000,000

From 1 Feb 2027, a channel earns its share of the Shorts Creator Pool and Premium revenue for a month only if it has at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Below that, the Shorts share for that month is zero.

  2. SEG 02 The window rolls

Every day a new day enters the window and the oldest one drops out. A viral Short lifts you for exactly 90 days, then it falls off the back. Steady daily views matter more than one spike.

  3. SEG 03 Measured on the 15th

YouTube measures the 90 days ending on the 15th of the month before the one being paid. If applied exactly as written, your February 2027 Shorts earnings depend on 18 Oct 2026 – 15 Jan 2027: that window is already open.

  4. SEG 04 Miss it, keep YPP

Falling short doesn't remove you from the YouTube Partner Program. Your other YPP earnings, including long-form videos, keep working, and Shorts revenue resumes automatically once you're back above 10M.

Private by design. Files are read in your browser; nothing about your channel is uploaded. Studio exports are limited to 500 rows, which is plenty for a year of daily totals.

New channel?

Get into YPP before the bar doubles

From 1 Feb 2027, new applicants need 8,000 watch hours or 20M Shorts views. Until then it's 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views (plus 1,000 subscribers either way).

You qualify today, but not under the 2027 thresholds.

Apply before 1 Feb 2027. YouTube hasn’t said how applications still in review on that date are handled, so earlier is safer.

  • Changes to the YouTube Partner Program

    YouTube Help

From 1 Feb 2027 creators need 10M qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool; missing it doesn't remove you from YPP or affect long-form earnings. Accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 Jan 2027. New applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours (365 days) or 20M qualified Shorts views (90 days).

  • YouTube Shorts monetization policies

    YouTube Help

From 1 Feb 2027, 10M qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days are needed each month for Creator Pool ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue, measured over the 90-day period ending on the 15th of the month before the month being paid. Shorts Feed ad revenue is pooled monthly, split between the Creator Pool and music licensing by music use, allocated by share of engaged views per country; creators keep 45%. Payments use eligible “engaged views”.

  • New opportunities to earn and changes to the YouTube Partner Program

    YouTube Blog, 10 Aug 2026

Channels below 10M stay in YPP and keep earning on long-form; Shorts revenue sharing resumes automatically once they cross 10M again. Existing YPP members aren't affected by the new entry thresholds. Premium subscription pools are 30% (Premium) and 60% (Premium Lite) of net subscription revenue; creators receive 55% (long-form) or 45% (Shorts) of their distribution.

  • YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility

    YouTube Help

Current entry thresholds: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 10M qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours don't count towards watch hours.

  • Get started creating YouTube Shorts: “Changes to Shorts views count”

    YouTube Help

Since 31 Mar 2025 “Views” counts every start or replay; the older metric is now “Engaged views”, and YPP eligibility and Shorts revenue sharing are based on engaged views. (Wording from the 2025 change; the newer page answer/2991785 says eligibility uses “qualified views”.)

  • How engagement metrics are counted

    YouTube Help

From 24 Aug 2026 views count the moment a video starts to play, across all formats. YPP eligibility is still based on “qualified views” and earnings on “engaged views”. Verified metrics can take several days to show in your Earn tab milestones.

Our reading of the rule: the 15th-of-the-previous-month measurement means February 2027 pay depends on the 90 days from 18 Oct 2026 to 15 Jan 2027. That’s our interpretation of YouTube’s wording; YouTube’s own numbers and decisions are what count.
